...Arab general who conquered Iraq. A member of the Zuhrā family of the Quraysh tribe. A follower of Muhammad since Mecca. Appointed commander of the army to conquer Iraq by the second caliph, Umar I, he defeated the Sassanid army at the Battle of al-Qādisiya on the middle Euphrates River and then captured the capital, Ctesiphon. He founded the military city of Kufa in southern Iraq and became its first governor (emir). He was appointed a member of the Council of Six Elders to select the third caliph, but then retired from politics.
