...The name varies depending on the place where it is used, such as the outer side pillar and the inner side pillar, the main building pillar and the eaves pillar when there is a distinction between the main building and the eaves, the mokoshi pillar, the veranda pillar, the main pillar and the supporting pillar in a gate or wall, etc. Also, the corner pillar and the other flat pillars are distinguished from the same side pillar. Furthermore, depending on the type of building, there are names such as the outer and inner sanctuary pillars in Buddhist halls, the raigo pillars behind the Buddhist altar, the Shiten pillars that correspond to the entrance pillars in pagodas, the central pillar that supports the sorin, the alcove pillars in shoin and private homes, the Daikoku pillar in the central position of a private home, and more special names such as the munamuchi pillar that stands separately on the gable side of a Shinmei-zukuri building in the main hall of a shrine, and the uzu pillar in the center of a Taisha-zukuri building. In terms of cross-sectional shapes, in addition to circular and square pillars, there are hexagonal and octagonal pillars, rectangular mirror pillars, single-sided pillars, and menkawa pillars with naturally rounded corners.

…使用する場所によって名称が異なり，外回りの側（かわ）柱と，それより1間内側の入側（いりかわ）柱，身舎(母屋)（もや）･庇（ひさし）の別があるときはそれぞれ身舎(母屋)柱･庇柱，そのほか裳階（もこし）柱，向拝柱，門や塀における本柱と控柱などといい，同じ側柱でも隅柱とそれ以外の平柱を区別する。さらに建物の種類により，仏堂では外陣柱と内陣柱，仏壇後ろの来迎柱，塔では入側柱に相当する四天柱，相輪を支持する心柱(檫)，書院や民家における床の間の床柱，民家の中心的位置にある大黒柱，さらに特殊なものとして神社本殿で，神明造の妻側に離れて立つ棟持（むなもち）柱や，大社造の中心にあるうず柱などの名称がある。　断面の形状をみると，円柱と方柱のほか六角柱，八角柱，長方形の鏡柱や片蓋（かたぶた）柱，角に自然の丸みを残した面皮（めんかわ）柱などがある。…
