A language belonging to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It is spoken in isolation in the Autonomous Republic of North Ossetia in the Russian Federation and the Autonomous Oblast of South Ossetia in the Republic of Georgia. There are two dialects, one in the east and one in the west, but the literature is mainly limited to the eastern one. It was once widespread in southern Russia. It shows a great deal of influence from Caucasian languages.
