A state of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the northernmost state in the country, occupying the southern half of the Jutland Peninsula, bordering Denmark to the north, the Baltic Sea to the east, and the North Sea to the west. It is separated by the Eider River from Schleswig (Slesvig in Danish) to the north and Holstein to the south. It includes the island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea, the North Frisian Islands, and the island of Helgoland in the North Sea, and has an area of 15,659 km2 and a population of 2.71 million (1995).
