Sherrington, CS (English spelling) SherringtonCS

[Type of sensation]
Table 1 shows the classification of receptors according to the type of stimulus. Charles Scott Sherrington (1857-1952) also divided receptors into exteroceptors (receptors that respond to stimuli from outside the body) and interoceptors (receptors that respond to stimuli from within the body) based on the relationship between receptors and stimuli (1926). The former were further divided into teleceptors (receptors that respond to stimuli emitted from places far away from the body, such as visual, auditory, and olfactory receptors) and tangoceptors (receptors for taste and those in the skin and mucous membranes), and the latter into proprioceptors (receptors for the position of the body such as muscles, tendons, joints, and labyrinths, and for the movement of the limbs) and visceroceptors (receptors in the internal organs).
