Shigetayu-bushi

Japanese:
Shigetayu-bushi

A school of Kamigata Joruri. The name of Miyakoji Shigetayu, a disciple of Miyakoji Bungonojo, appears in the review "Fude no Kaomise Oumu no Suzuri" published in 1733 (Kyoho 18), and since he was famous around the time of his master Bungonojo's death (1740), he changed his surname to Toyomi and formed an independent school during the Kanpo era (1741-1744). He also performed in Kabuki plays, but is thought to have been popular as zashiki joruri, mainly in the pleasure quarters of Shimanouchi, Osaka. No successor was produced, and Shigetayu's style died out after its heyday, but the blind man Tsuruyama Koto enjoyed telling his stories, and during the Horeki era (1751-64) he went down to Edo and lived in Yoshiwara, where he popularized Kamigata songs. The "Izumikyokushu," published in 1762, includes two pieces that Koto composed himself, "Autumn Grasses of Imose" and "Wet Fan." In Osaka in particular, Shigetayu's joruri pieces were popular among blind musicians, including Utaki Kengyo, and later new compositions were written by jiuta performers.

Even today, these songs have been absorbed and passed down in jiuta as Shigetafu monogatari.
