A long, narrow, double-cambered boat used by the Vikings and Scandinavian peoples of the time. Ships of this type date back to 2000 BCE, but a unique feature of Viking ships is the use of a keel, which allowed them to sail and gave them stability in beam waves. Archaeological experiments have shown that they successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean. They had a shallow draft, allowing them to run ashore on either side. There were an equal number of oar holes on each side, and the size of the ship was measured by the number of seats with a pair of oar holes on either side.
