Thin ink paper - Usuzumigami

Japanese:
Thin ink paper - Usuzumigami

A type of paper produced at Kamiyain, a government-run paper mill in the Heian period. It is recycled paper made by refining waste paper, and is also called shukushi, with a grey color due to incomplete decolorization of the ink. It is also called suiunshi because of the unevenness of the paper. At first, it was used to refining letters from the deceased and copying sutras onto it to pray for their souls, but as it was eventually used for official documents, it came to be called sendishi, rinjishi, and other names. As power gradually shifted from the aristocracy to the samurai class at the end of the Heian period and superior local paper such as Michinokugami became available, the status of Kamiyain and the quality of the paper it produced declined, and thin ink paper became synonymous with Kamiya paper. In the Edo period, the term came to mean low-quality dust paper made in private homes near Nishinotoin in Kyoto. In later times, however, a new light-colored craft paper, made by adding a small amount of ink to the paper as a hobby, also appeared.
