Three Obediences - Sanju

Japanese: 三従 - さんじゅう

〘noun〙 Three paths that women were expected to follow. They were said in Buddhism and Confucian morality. They teach the mindset of a woman: obey your father at home, obey your husband as a wife , and obey your son after your husband dies. Women have three obediences. sanju. sansho. ※Preface to the Satsuma-kyo Commentary (611): "In this way, _two Ayutthaya friends should call their wives wives _one , _two, three, and one _obedience ." 〘名〙女性が従うべきとされた三つの道。仏教や儒教道徳でいわれたもの。家にあっては父に従い、嫁(か)しては夫に従い、夫が死んだあとは子に従うという女性としての心がまえを教えたことば。女は三従。さんじゅ。さんしょう。※勝鬘経義疏（611）序「則為_二阿踰闍友称夫人_一顕_二三従之礼_一」〔和俗童子訓（1710）〕〔儀礼‐喪服〕[語誌](1)「儀礼‐喪服篇」から出たことば。五障（女は梵天、帝釈天、魔王、転輪聖王、仏身になれないという障害）と共に女の宿命とされてきた。
