Male

Among dioecious organisms, this refers to animals with testes and plants that produce small gametes. It is the opposite of female. However, in lower organisms, the distinction between males and females may be determined by the relative relationships between individuals. In sexual reproduction, the gametes (sperm, etc.) produced by males are smaller than the gametes (eggs, etc.) produced by females, and many of them are motile. Many animals exhibit sexual behavior during reproduction, but it is mainly males that play an active role in various behaviors such as territorial behavior, searching for the opposite sex, courtship, and mating. Many male animals have external or behavioral characteristics (secondary sexual characteristics) that females do not have, but many of these characteristics play a signaling role in the aforementioned behaviors.

雌雄異体の生物のなかで、精巣のある動物個体や、小配偶子を生産する植物個体をさす。雌の対語。ただし、下等生物では雄と雌の区別は個体間の相対的な関係で決まる場合もある。有性生殖において、雄のつくる配偶子（精子など）は雌の生産する配偶子（卵など）に比べて小形で、運動性のあるものも多い。動物では生殖に際して性行動がみられるものが多いが、縄張り行動、異性の探索、求愛、交尾などの諸行動において積極的な役割を果たすのは主として雄である。動物の雄では、雌にない外形的あるいは行動的特徴（二次性徴）のあるものが多いが、これらの特徴の多くは前述の諸行動において信号的な役割を果たしている。
