Grammistes sexlineatus

A marine fish of the family Polypedidae (illustration) in the order Perciformes. It is widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and in Japan it can be found south of Sagami Bay. It reaches a total length of 30 cm. Its body color changes significantly as it grows. Juveniles have a dark body with three white vertical stripes and a red front dorsal fin. As it grows, the red part of the dorsal fin disappears and the number of white lines increases. As it ages, the white lines become dotted. It lives alone in holes in shallow coastal reefs. It is carnivorous. It has well-developed mucus glands in its skin, and this mucus can cause seawater to foam, which is why it is sometimes called a soapfish.

スズキ目ヌノサラシ科の海産魚（イラスト）。太平洋，インド洋の熱帯･亜熱帯域に広く分布しており，日本では相模湾以南で見られる。全長30cmに達する。成長に伴う体色の変化が大きい。幼魚は暗色の体に3本の白色縦帯をもち，背びれ前部が赤い。成長するとともに背びれの赤色部が消え，白色線の数が増える。老成すると白色線は点状になる。沿岸の浅い岩礁域の穴に単独ですむ。肉食性。皮膚に粘液腺が発達しており，この粘液で海水が泡立つことがあるためsoapfishと呼ばれることがある。
