Oswego (English spelling)

Japanese: オスウィーゴ(英語表記)Oswego
Oswego (English spelling)
A city on Lake Ontario in the northern part of New York State, the United States. It is located at the mouth of the Oswego River, about 55 km northwest of Syracuse. In 1722, during the time of the British colony, a trading post was established here, and it was a junction of the Hudson-Mohawk Waterway, which connected the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River system, and the New York region on the east coast. In 1727, a fort was built here. During the Seven Years' War (1756-63), it was a target of both British and French forces. In 1796, full-scale colonization began. In the first half of the 19th century, the Oswego Canal connected Oswego to New York via the Erie Canal, and in 1959, the completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway connected the port of Oswego directly to foreign ports. Manufacturing industries such as boilers, matches, paper, and cornstarch are located here. It is also the power center of central New York State. The State University of New York's School of Education is located here. Population 19,195 (1990).
