1785‐1846 A Milanese liberal aristocrat. Seeking freedom and independence for Lombardy, which came under Napoleon's rule and then under Austrian control after the Congress of Vienna, he pursued a political movement while maintaining contact with the secret societies of the time, such as the Carbonari Party. After his connection to the Piedmontese Revolution in 1821 was discovered, he was arrested by the Austrian police and sentenced to life imprisonment after a major trial, but regained his freedom in 1837.
