When a target system is represented as a linear dynamical system, if the current internal state of the system can be uniquely determined from the measured data of the output signal over a certain time interval from the present to the past, the system is said to be observable. In mathematical terms, observability is the condition under which the current value of the system's state variables (state space) can be obtained as a linear functional of the time function of past measured values. In physics, this is a concept introduced to clarify the connection between the system's output and internal state, and is dual to the concept of controllability, which specifies the relationship between the input and internal state.

対象とするシステムを線形ダイナミカルシステムで表したとき，現時点から過去のある時間区間にわたる出力信号の測定データから，システムの現時点の内部状態を一意的に決めることができるとき，そのシステムは可観測であるという。数学のことばでいえば，システムの状態変数(状態空間)の現在値が過去の測定値の時間関数の線形汎関数として求めうるための条件が可観測性である。これは，物理的には，システムの出力と内部状態のつながりぐあいを明確にするために導入された概念であり，入力と内部状態の関係を規定する可制御性controllabilityの概念と双対になる。
