A decorative style of early Spanish Renaissance architecture. Intricate and abundant relief decoration, like silverwork (plateria), was applied to building facades and around windows. Early examples include the Royal Hospital of Santiago de Compostela (1501-11), the Santa Cruz Hospital in Toledo (05-14), and the University of Salamanca (16-29). D. Siloé's Granada Cathedral (28-43) represents its height. In the early 1540s, it was strongly influenced by the Italian High Renaissance, and continued until the accession of Philip II (56), but was later replaced by classical styles and revived in the 17th century.
