Lee Seung-hun (English) (R)I Sǔng-hun

Japanese: 李昇薫 - りしょうくん（英語表記）(R)I Sǔng‐hun

1864‐1930
Korean independence activist and educator. His pen name was Nam-gwang. He was from North Pyongan Province. He was successful as a merchant at a young age, but after turning 40, he was inspired by Ahn Chang-ho's speech and decided to devote himself to the national movement. He used his personal wealth to establish the Osan School in Jeongju, North Pyongan Province, in 1907, and was active in the patriotic enlightenment movement. After serving four years in prison for the 105-man incident in 1911 (in which members of the Shinminhui association were arrested on the pretext of plotting to assassinate Governor-General Terauchi Masatake), he converted to Christianity and aimed to salvage the nation through education and faith. During the March 1st Independence Movement, he became a leading figure in the Christian world and was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

朝鮮の独立運動家，教育者。号は南岡。平安北道出身。若くして商人として成功したが，40歳をすぎて安昌浩の演説に感銘を受け民族運動への献身を決意，私財を投げうって1907年平安北道定州に五山学校を設立し，愛国啓蒙運動で活躍。11年百五人事件(寺内正毅総督暗殺陰謀の口実で新民会の会員を逮捕)で4年間服役後キリスト教に入信，教育と信仰による救国運動をめざした。三･一独立運動ではキリスト教界の重鎮として独立宣言文署名者の一人となった。
