Year of death: August 19, 1194 (September 5, 1194) Year of birth: 1134 A military commander from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. A resident of Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture). Son of Kai Genji Minamoto Yoshikiyo and adopted son of his elder brother Kiyomitsu. In 1180 (Jisho 4), he raised an army with his family in response to Minamoto no Yoritomo's uprising. After the victory at the Battle of Fujigawa, he was appointed by Minamoto no Yoritomo as the guardian of Totomi Province (Shizuoka Prefecture), but showed his own independent actions, such as entering Kyoto in response to Minamoto no Yoshinaka's visit to Kyoto (1183) and being appointed as the governor of Totomi by the Imperial Court. He later participated in the defeat of Yoshinaka and the Battle of Ichinotani (1184), but it is thought that he did not become completely subordinate to Yoritomo until after the downfall of the Taira clan. In 1193 (Kenkyu 4), he incurred the wrath of Yoritomo for an affair with his son Yoshisuke, and his territory was confiscated. The following year, he was executed on suspicion of treason.
