It is a square seat with legs, a balustrade on either side of the seat, and a torii-shaped backrest. Examples can be found in the Shosoin Repository, and it was used by the emperor and other high-ranking nobles at the Imperial Court during the Heian period. Those for the emperor were called goishi or goshi no throne, and those made of black persimmon were placed in the Shishinden Hall and those made of rosewood in the Seiryoden Hall, but in early modern times they came to be lacquered. A brocade or twill carpet was laid on top, and a step stool was required for a young emperor. A small goishi decorated with plain patterns was used when the crown prince came of age.
