An Islamic mystical sect (tariqa) founded by Ahmad al-Badawi. It is also known as the Badawi sect. It is said that the foundations of the sect were established in the 13th century in the town of Tanta in Lower Egypt. It became influential as a sect from the mid-15th century onwards. It continued to develop during the period of Ottoman rule, and grew to become the most influential sect in Egypt. The sect was organised around the tomb of Ahmad al-Badawi in the town of Tanta, and the Mawlid festival, which celebrates the anniversary of the saint's death, attracted pilgrims from all over Egypt.
