A privately compiled law book written by a person well versed in law, compiling and describing the customary law of a particular region. Originally, they did not have the force of law, but over the years, many of them have acquired the same authority as a legal code. Many are written in the local language rather than in Latin. Examples of this include the Saxon Spiegel, the Schwabian Spiegel, the Deutschen Spiegel, and the customary law of Beauvage in France.
