Jacksonian Democracy

A term used to describe the "democratic" reform movement during the time of A. Jackson, the seventh president of the United States (in office 1829-37). After the Second Anglo-American War (1812-14), the Industrial Revolution and the development of the West led to rapid population change, which in turn caused the control of local notables to be shaken, and popular movements and agitations spread throughout the country. From the 1820s to the 1840s, there were outbreaks of labor union movements, the Working Man Party movement, the anti-Mason movement, the Emancipation Movement, the second Renaissance movement, the Door Rebellion in Rhode Island (1842), which demanded the expansion of suffrage, and the Rent Rebellion in New York (1839-46).

アメリカ合衆国第7代大統領A.ジャクソン(在職1829‐37)の時代の〈民主的な〉改革運動を総括する概念。第2次英米戦争(1812‐14)後，産業革命と西部開拓の進展により人口の急激な流動化が起こり，各地方の名望家支配が動揺し始め，民衆運動や民衆扇動が全国的に展開された。1820年代から40年代にかけて，労働組合運動，勤労者党の運動，反メーソン運動，奴隷解放運動，第2次信仰復興運動，選挙権拡大を要求するロード･アイランド州のドアの乱(1842)，ニューヨーク州の地代反対一揆(1839‐46)等が噴出した。
