Tamasudare

Japanese: タマスダレ
Tamasudare
A cold-resistant bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family native to the La Plata region of Peru. It has thick linear leaves 20-30 cm long that grow at the base of the plant, and a single white flower blooms on one stem from summer to autumn. There are six identical tepals, each about 4 cm long. It was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period. It is closely related to the false saffron plant native to Central America. The flowers are pink and about 8 cm in diameter. They flower from late spring to summer. Both species prefer moist places. They are suitable for flower beds and potted plants.
