A type of wooden door. It was a fixture used in the openings of shinden-zukuri buildings, and was later adopted by shrines and Buddhist temples. It is made by placing a board between two lattices, or by nailing a board to the back of the lattice. It is divided into two parts, top and bottom, with the top half hanging from the lintel and the bottom half fastened to the threshold with a latch. When opening, the top half is flipped up and the tip is fastened with a metal fitting, and the bottom half is removed. ◇It is also called "shimo." In addition, those that are set up in gardens or verandas to be used as privacy screens are called "tateshimo." Source : Kodansha Dictionary of House and Interior Terms Information |
