Essays. Written by Kyokutei Bakin. Published in 1803 (Kyowa 3). A record of Bakin's only trip to Kyoto and Osaka, taken at the age of 36. In all, 157 articles, he meticulously records, sometimes with illustrations, the strange happenings, strange tales, customs, trends, historical sites, and people he saw and heard on his journey to and from Kyoto, Osaka, and the Settsu region. These are invaluable resources, but for Bakin, they were also an opportunity to greatly expand his knowledge of his own country's culture, history, and folklore, and had a considerable influence on his later writing.
