Shinobuzaka

Japanese:
Shinobuzaka
The ancient name of the area on the western foot of Mount Tokama in the eastern part of Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture. It is also written as Onsaka or Osasaka, and is also called Osaka. The relic name of Oshisaka in Sakurai City is Ossaka. The place name Oshisaka appears in the Nihon Shoki, in the pre-accession chapter of Emperor Jimmu, and in the October entry for the 39th year of Emperor Suinin's reign. According to the latter article, 1,000 swords were made at this time, and they were stored in Oshisaka Village, and then moved to Isonokami Shrine (present-day Tenri City, Nara Prefecture). Also, the inscription on the Sumida Hachiman Jinbutsu Eijikyo, which is kept at Sumida Hachiman Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture and is thought to date back to the 5th century, reads "The Great King, His Younger Brother, is at Oshisaka Palace," which may indicate that Emperor Keitai was at Oshisaka Palace (there is also a theory that Oshisaka Palace is a person's name). It is believed that Emperor Ingyo's wife, Oshisaka no Oinakahime, and Emperor Bidatsu's son, Oshisakahikohito no Oe no Oji, had palaces here, and the tomb of Emperor Jomei (Oshisaka Nairyo) was also built here. Under the Ritsuryo system, the area belonged to Shikinokami County and became Oshisaka-go, and in the Middle Ages there was Oshisaka-sho, and in the early modern period there was Oshisaka (Onsaka) village. There is a shrine listed in the Engishiki, Oshisaka Isumune Shrine.
