A highway from the Edo period. It branches off at Senju-shuku on the Nikko Road, and further splits into the Mito Road and Sakura Road at Shinjuku. Attached to the Nikko Road, the Mito Road was under the control of the road magistrate up to Matsudo-shuku, and the Sakura Road up to Yawata-shuku. The Mito Road passes through Kanamachi, Matsudo-seki, Fujishiro, Tsuchiura, and other places before reaching Mito. The course was determined at the end of the Keicho period, and it is believed that the organization was established in parallel with the sankin-kotai system. As the highway was largely grassland, Tokugawa Mitsukuni lined it with trees in several places during the Jokyo era (1684-88) to make travel easier. It was used as a route for sankin-kotai routes for various feudal lords, including the Mito domain, and also as a deer hunting route for the shogun at Koganemaki.
