...However, in the second half of the 20th century, the focus of research shifted from the traditional morphological and developmental analysis to the analysis of functions and their socio-economic factors. The impetus for this shift was the critical adoption of W. Christaller's central settlement theory (1933) in the context of the integration of cities and villages and the upheaval of society, the economy, and population, and the subsequent popularity of social geography. Research into cities and their spheres of influence, as well as the socio-economic classification of settlement units, has come to play a major role in urban and regional planning today.
