…Leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), a national liberation movement organization in Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) and Cape Verde in Africa. He founded the PAIGC in September 1956 and began armed struggle under his leadership in January 1963.

…The 1951 amendment to the Portuguese Constitution transformed the country from a colony to an overseas state. In September 1956, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) was founded in Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) on the African mainland under the leadership of A. Cabral. In July 1963, a PAIGC executive meeting was held on the struggle for Cape Verde, and the national liberation movement was fought by the PAIGC.

...With the amendment of the Portuguese Constitution in 1951, the country was transformed from a colony into an overseas state. In September 1956, the national liberation movement organization PAIGC (Party of Africans for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde) was founded in Bissau under the leadership of Amílcar Cabral. In August 1959, the Portuguese military cracked down on a strike by Bissau shipyard workers (50 people were killed), and the PAIGC switched its tactics to armed struggle. In 1960, the PAIGC sent a letter to the Portuguese government demanding independence, but the Portuguese government rejected it.
