Historically, it developed from compagnia, a family association that several heirs organized in medieval Italy to jointly continue the family business under the existing trade name, and it is said that the first legislation regarding partnerships was the French Commercial Code of 1673. The name "partnership company" comes from the French Commercial Code of 1807, which called a partnership a "société en nom collectif" (a company of a general partnership).
