Hatchet carving

Japanese: 鉈彫 - なたぼり

A woodcarving technique that uses a hatchet to carve rough surfaces as if they had been carved with a hatchet. There are many examples of this style in African sculpture. In Japanese Buddhist sculpture, statues with striped patterns of chisel marks on the surface of the statue are called hatchet carvings. Although they may appear unfinished at first glance, there are many examples and they are considered to be a form of sculpture. Production was concentrated from the second half of the 11th century onwards, towards the end of the Heian period, and many are found in the Kanto and Tohoku regions. Among the oldest relics, the Eleven-Headed Kannon statue at Komyoji Temple is well known.

木彫の技法。鉈を用い，また鉈を用いたかのようにおおまかな面で彫刻するもの。アフリカ黒人彫刻にその作例が多い。日本の仏像彫刻では，像身表面に丸鑿 (のみ) の彫り跡を縞模様に残した像を鉈彫像と呼ぶ。一見未完成とも見えるが作例も多く，一つの造像法と考えられている。制作は 11世紀後半以降，平安時代末期に集中しており，関東，東北地方に多く分布している。古い遺品では弘明寺の『十一面観音像』が著名。
