Kikuchi Castle

Japanese: 鞠智城 - きくちじょう

An ancient Korean-style mountain castle located in the town of Kikuka in Kumamoto Prefecture (now Yamaga City), between Yonabaru and Kikuchi City. It was called "Kukuchi Castle", but was later written as Kikuchi Castle. An article in the Shoku Nihongi for 698 mentions repairs. It is thought to have been built for internal defense after the defeat at the Battle of Baekgang in 663, but given its location it is also thought to have been for defense to the south of Dazaifu. More than 2km of earthworks, gate foundations, and a group of foundation stones believed to be the remains of a storehouse have been confirmed on the southern edge.

熊本県菊鹿(きくか)町（現・山鹿市）米原(よなばる)から菊池市にかけて所在する古代朝鮮式山城(さんじょう)。〈くくちじょう〉と呼ばれていたが，のちには菊池城と書かれた。《続日本紀》の698年の記事に修理のことが見える。663年の白村江(はくそんこう)の戦で敗れたのち国内防備のために築造されたと考えられるが，立地から大宰府(だざいふ)の南の防備とも考えられる。南辺で２km以上の土塁(どるい)，門礎，倉庫跡と推定される礎石群などが確認された。
