...The log cabin was built in the woodlands of their homeland, with freshly felled logs stacked horizontally, the roof also made of logs, wooden nails driven into the tenons (because there were no iron nails), and the gaps filled with mud or wood chips. It had one or two rooms, but was sturdy and well insulated, and soon colonists from other countries adopted it and spread to the western frontier (although in the prairie areas without forests, sod houses were built). The log cabin eventually became a symbol of the pioneer spirit, and in the 1840 presidential election, WH Harrison successfully promoted the (false) image of a common man who grew up in a log cabin. ...
