...a branch of clinical medicine. In the early days of the field, gynecology and obstetrics developed separately. The prefixes gyneco- and gyne- in gynecology mean related to women, so etymologically, gynecology can be said to be a field that studies the whole of women. However, at the beginning, it was considered to deal with abnormalities in the function and shape of the female genitals (including the mammary glands) by organ. Furthermore, the phenomena of pregnancy and childbirth have unique aspects as reproductive departments, and in the past, experienced women performed midwifery, so they tended to be treated separately from gynecology.
