The coruro , Spalacopus cyanus (English name: coruro), which lives in the mountains of Chile up to 3000 m above sea level, has a short tail of 4-5 cm, a body length of 14-16 cm, small ears, long claws on its front feet, and lives in long holes that it digs itself. The Octodontidae are primitive South American rodents related to the Tuco-Tucco, Hutia, and Nutria, and are thought to have descended from the Paramys in North America, and appeared as early as the late Oligocene. …
