A village in Nakakubiki County in southern Niigata Prefecture. Population 5,572 (1995). It is located at the northeastern foot of Mt. Myoko, and the Katakai River, Shibue River, and Yashiro River, tributaries of the Seki River, flow through the area. The central settlement, Nihongi, developed as a post town on the Hokkoku Kaido road from Shinano in the early modern period. Nihongi Station on the Shinetsu Main Line was opened in 1912, and in 1920, a Nippon Soda factory was built in front of the station. Power plants were built on the Yashiro River and Shibue River, and the area developed into one of Japan's leading soda production areas. Matsugamine Onsen was opened in 1963, and a ski resort and golf course were also opened, and the area is now a popular tourist destination with magnificent views and modern accommodation facilities. 新潟県南部,中頸城(なかくびき)郡の村。人口5572(1995)。妙高山の北東麓にあり,関川の支流片貝川,渋江川,矢代川が流れる。中心集落の二本木は近世,信濃からの北国街道の宿場町として発達した。1912年に信越本線の二本木駅が開設され,20年には駅前に日本曹達(株)の工場が進出し,矢代川,渋江川には発電所が建設され,日本有数のソーダ生産地として発展した。1963年松ヶ峰温泉が開湯,スキー場,ゴルフ場なども開かれ,雄大な眺望と近代的な宿泊施設をもつ観光地としてにぎわっている。
