...It is a Japanese nickname for Italian westerns, sometimes called "macaroni westerns." In English-speaking countries, it is called "spaghetti westerns." After Hollywood film capital, which had been producing films at low cost using Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Madrid, Spain as overseas production bases, withdrew in the early 1960s, "westerns" were produced by the remaining facilities and staff. The worldwide hit of Sergio Leone's (1921?-89) Western adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (1961), sparked a huge boom in westerns.
