For esophageal cancer, thanks to the ingenuity of the Japanese doctor Nakayama Komei, a surgical technique was developed in 1940 that any surgeon could perform. For pancreatic head cancer, which was previously considered difficult to treat, the surgical procedure has undergone various changes and has been perfected since A.O. Whipple successfully performed a pancreaticoduodenectomy in 1935, and combined with high-calorie infusion therapy, it can now be performed in general hospitals. Furthermore, for liver cancer, which was previously thought to be beyond the reach of a scalpel, the extent of resection can be determined by intraoperative ultrasound diagnosis, and wide-area resections can now be performed thanks to the development of laser scalpels.
