Knies - Karl Gustav Adolf Knies

German economist. Born in Marburg. Studied at the University of Heidelberg, where he served as a professor from 1865 to 1896. Along with Roscher and Hildebrand, he is considered to be one of the founders of the German Historical School. He emphasized the historical perspective of economic research, and in particular developed its methodology. In other words, a national economy is not simply a collection of self-interested individuals, as British classical economics holds, but is an organism that is formed historically, and therefore national economics must consider the changes and development of the national economy historically and comparatively, and he emphasized the importance of studying economic history. However, he was not involved in specific economic history research, but instead devoted himself to methodology. His arguments had a great influence on the later Historical School, including Schmoller. His main work is Political Economy According to the Historical Method (1853).

ドイツの経済学者。マールブルクに生まれる。ハイデルベルク大学に学び、1865年から96年まで同大学教授を務めた。ロッシャー、ヒルデブラントとともにドイツ歴史学派の創始者とされる。彼は経済学研究の歴史的立場を強調し、とくにその方法論を展開した。すなわち、国民経済とはイギリス古典派経済学の考えるように利己心をもつ個人の単なる集合ではなく、歴史的に形成される有機体であるから、国民経済学は国民経済の変化・発展の様相を歴史的・比較的に考察しなければならないとして、経済史研究の重要性を強調した。しかし、彼は具体的な経済史研究には関与せず、方法論に没頭した。彼の主張は、シュモラーなど後期歴史学派に大きな影響を与えた。主著には『歴史的方法に基づく政治経済学』（1853）がある。
