…One is the process in which an electron in a shallow level falls into this vacant inner shell and emits the energy difference as an X-ray, and the other is the process in which this energy difference is given to another electron, which is then emitted outside the atom. The latter phenomenon is called the Auger effect, and the electron that is released outside the atom by this effect is called an Auger electron. This phenomenon was discovered in argon by the French Auger Pierre Auger in 1925. …
