American film. Made in 1925. Released in Japan the following year (Taisho 15). Produced, written, directed and starring Charles Chaplin. His 74th film and first full-length comedy. It was a silent film, but Chaplin himself added accompanying music and sound effects to it when it was re-released. As the original title "Gold Rush" suggests, the film is set in Alaska during the time of the gold mines' discovery, when people from all over the country gathered in hopes of getting rich quick. The wandering Chaplin encounters a criminal with a bounty on his head and Big Jim (Mac Swain), a large man looking for gold, and falls in love with Georgia (Georgia Hale), a saloon girl whose love is beyond his reach. Among the highlights are the scene where Chaplin, facing starvation, eats one of his own shoes, the fantasy scene where he dine with his girlfriend, where he performs a dance in which he sticks a fork into a bread roll to represent a foot, and the thrill of a mountain hut nearly collapsing off a cliff after a night of fierce snowstorm. This masterpiece, which presents the tragedy of human cruelty as a comedy and makes the beauty of love more valuable than gold, has also been hailed as the best in the history of world cinema.
