Ugandan poet. One of East Africa's leading poets. He studied social anthropology in the UK and has served as a university professor since returning to the UK. He writes in Acholi and English. His work is based on an emphasis on the traditional cultural values of the Acholi people. His representative works include the prose poems The Song of Lawino (1966) and The Song of Oshol (1970), and the Acholi novel Are Your Teeth White? Then Smile (1953).
