...The panopticon, a surveillance system invented by J. Bentham, was the product of this "excess of seeing" not leading to enjoyment but rather to a so-called "tyranny of the visual sense." The inventors of the modern panorama are said to be J. A. Breysig (1766-1831), an architectural painter from Danzig (now Gdansk), and R. Barker (1739-1806), a painter from Edinburgh.
