The Amboise Conspiracy - The Amboise Conspiracy

A conspiracy hatched by Protestants (Huguenots) in March 1560 to recapture the young French king, Francis II, from the hands of the Guise family, ardent Catholics. The leader of the conspiracy was the Protestant nobleman La Renaudie, but it is also said that Prince Louis de Condé was behind it. When the Protestants were on their way to the royal château of Amboise, where the royal court was located at the time, the conspiracy was discovered by the betrayal of Pierre Desabénel, a lawyer at the Paris High Court, and La Renaudie was killed and his co-conspirators executed. The incident seems to have been partly personal, partly political, and no clergyman who could be clearly considered to be Reformed was among those responsible.

1560年3月、熱烈なカトリック支持者であったギーズ一門の手からフランスの若き国王フランソア2世を奪回するために新教徒（ユグノー）が企てた陰謀事件。陰謀の首領は新教に帰依した貴族ラ・ルノーディであったが、背後にはルイ・ド・コンデ親王がいたとも伝えられる。当時宮廷があったアンボアーズの王城に新教徒が向かっていたとき、パリ高等法院弁護士ピエール・デザベネルの裏切りによって陰謀が発覚、ラ・ルノーディは殺され共謀者たちも処刑された。事件は、なかば個人的、なかば政治的な企てのように思われ、明らかに改革派とみられる聖職者は、事件の責任者のなかには見当たらない。
