An instrument that sounds the string of a bow. It is also called a bow harp. It is either made by bending an elastic rod and tying a string to both ends, or by splitting a part of the rod into a string (cut-string type). There is some debate as to its relationship to hunting bows. It is currently found in America from Patagonia to California, Central and South Africa, Asia, and Oceania. It was once found in Europe (Netherlands, Italy, Lithuania, and East Prussia). It originated in the Neolithic period, and is said to be the oldest stringed instrument. With an increased number of strings, it became a type of instrument similar to the lyre or harp, and with a resonator, it became a type of instrument similar to the lute or zither.
