Umewaka school

A school of Noh. It is an old family that performed at the Tamba Sarugaku Umewaka-za, and since the Edo period it has belonged to the Kanze school. When the head of the Noh school, Kiyotaka, moved to Shizuoka with the shogun after the Meiji Restoration, Umewaka Minoru I stayed in Tokyo, devoted himself to the arts, and endured hardships such as hanging furoshiki and using them to support the school, and became a major force in the school. However, he had a dispute with the head of the school over a license issue, and after Minoru's death, he was excommunicated in 1921. He became independent with Umewaka Manzaburo (I), Rokuro (II), and Kanze Tetsunojo (Kasetsu), and called himself the Umewaka school. He later returned to the Kanze school, leaving Rokuro behind, and the Rokuro family defended their sole base. During World War II, with the mediation of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the school was recognized as the Umewaka school of the Kanze school, but after the war, conflict arose again and performances were temporarily impossible. In 1954, it returned to the Kanze school.

能楽の一派。丹波猿楽梅若座に出る旧家で，江戸時代以降は観世流に属す。明治維新により，宗家の清孝が将軍とともに静岡に移住したとき，1世梅若実は東京にとどまり，芸道に精進し，風呂敷を掲げ幕代りに用いる辛苦を重ね，流儀を支えて一大勢力を占めたが，免状問題から宗家と争いを生じ，実の没後，1921年破門されて，梅若万三郎 (1世) ，六郎 (2世) ，観世銕之丞 (華雪) を擁して独立し，梅若流を称した。のち六郎を残して観世流に復帰，六郎一家が孤塁を守った。第2次世界大戦中は内務省の斡旋で，観世流梅若派として認められたが，戦後再度紛糾し，一時は上演不能となった。 54年に観世流に復帰。
