[The role of the church]
The Russian Orthodox Church was given the status of the official religion in the Russian Empire. In the 1897 census, 69.4% of the population were Orthodox, and 1.8% were Old Believers staroobryadtsy and sectarians, roughly corresponding to the number of East Slavic residents.
