[Died] May 20, 1956. Rapallo British essayist and caricaturist. He began publishing essays in the Yellow Book while studying at Oxford University. In 1898, he succeeded GB Shaw as drama critic for the Saturday Review. His essays and critiques are full of wit and reflect the fin de siècle dandyism. He produced many parodies of contemporary literary figures, including caricatures such as Rossetti and His Circle (1922), and is also famous for his novel Zuleika Dobson (1911), which satirizes Oxford. He lived on the Italian Riviera for the latter half of his life, except during World War II. He was knighted in 1939.

イギリスの随筆家，カリカチュアリスト。オックスフォード大学在学中から雑誌『イエロー・ブック』にエッセーを発表。 1898年 G.B.ショーのあとをうけて『サタデー・レビュー』誌の劇評を担当。エッセーや批評はいずれも機知に富み，世紀末のダンディズムを表わしている。『ロセッティとその一派』 Rossetti and His Circle (1922) などの戯画，同時代の文学者たちのパロディーが多数あり，オックスフォードを風刺した小説『ズレイカ・ドブソン』 Zuleika Dobson (1911) も有名。第2次世界大戦中を除いて，後半生はイタリアのリビエラに住んだ。 1939年ナイトに叙せられた。
