The capital of the eponymous region in southwestern Russia. It is often called Rostov, but its full name is used to avoid confusion with the ancient city of the same name northeast of Moscow. Population: 1,025,000 (1993). It is located on the lower reaches of the Don River, about 50 km northeast of the Sea of Azov. It was originally built as a port in 1749 when the mouth of the river was under Turkish control, and a fortress was built in 1761, and the area around it developed. It was an important shipping point, and grew along with the progress of Russian colonization of the Caucasus region in the 19th century.
