Aegean Principality

…Christianity spread to the island early on, and it eventually became part of the Orthodox Metropolitan Diocese of Paronaxia, along with the neighboring islands of Paros and Antiparos. During the Fourth Crusade, the Venetian nobleman Marco Sanudo established the Aegean Principality on the island (1207), with the Roman Catholic Archbishopric of Naxos as its base. Naxos, who fled the persecution of Jews in Spain and went into exile in Istanbul (Constantinople), became a favorite of the Ottoman Sultan, and ruled the island (1566-79), after which it was eventually incorporated into the Ottoman Empire. …
