…Even before the printing era, there were bookstores that produced, sold, and brokered manuscripts. From the Middle Ages onwards, publishing activities flourished due to the advancement of woodblock printing technology in China, Korea, and Japan, and the development of movable type printing by Gutenberg in Europe. However, it was only in the process of social modernization, and especially with the emergence of mass society, that publishing evolved into modern publishing, in the sense of actively and mass-produced, advertised, and sold to an unspecified number of readers. Therefore, the word publisher was established in England only in the 18th century, and until then it was common to call them booksellers or stationers. In Japan, too, those who produced and sold books were called "bookstores of things" until the Edo period. …

…その間,印刷以前の時代にも,写本の生産,販売,仲介を行う本屋が発生したし,中世以降になると,中国,朝鮮,日本における木版印刷技術の進歩,ヨーロッパにおけるグーテンベルクの活版印刷術の開発によって,出版活動は盛んになったが,出版が不特定多数の読者に対して,見込生産と宣伝,販売を大量かつ積極的に行うという意味で,近代出版に脱皮するのは,社会の近代化の過程においてであり,とくに大衆社会の出現によってである。したがってイギリスで出版者(パブリッシャーpublisher)という言葉が定着したのは近々18世紀のことであり,それまでは本屋(ブックセラーbook‐seller,あるいはステーショナーstationer)と呼ばれるのが一般的であった。日本においても,江戸時代までは本の生産,販売に当たる者が〈物の本屋〉と呼ばれていたのに対応している。…
